Diaper Bag Must-Haves: Everything You Really Need for Stress-Free Outings

There’s nothing worse than being out with your baby and realizing you forgot something important! Whether it’s an unexpected diaper blowout, a hungry baby, or a missing pacifier, the right diaper bag can make all the difference between a stressful outing and a smooth one.

Over time, I’ve learned that you don’t need to pack everything—just the essentials. A well-organized diaper bag keeps you prepared without weighing you down, so you can focus on enjoying time with your little one instead of worrying about what you left behind.

Whether you’re running errands, heading to a doctor’s appointment, or spending the day with family, these are the diaper bag essentials I always recommend having ready to go.

✦ Diaper Bag

I love this Diaper Bag Backpack for its convenient backpack design and thoughtful features for life on the go. It’s water-resistant for durability, spacious, and has compartments that make everything easy to find. It also attaches easily to a stroller or suitcase and comes with a detachable pacifier case.

✦ 5–6 Diapers

I personally love Pampers Swaddlers for the newborn stage. They fit snugly around newborn legs and feel soft against a baby’s delicate belly.

For the next stage, many parents choose an organic option like The Honest Company or transition to another brand that works best for their baby. Sometimes one diaper brand simply fits your baby better than another.

Mama Chick Pro Tip: Don’t stock up too heavily on newborn-size diapers. Start with approximately one large box and then be prepared to transition to Size 1. That growth spurt happens quickly!

✦ Wipes

WaterWipes are a favorite because they are made with 99.9% water and are fragrance-free.

For messier diaper changes, Huggies Natural Care Sensitive Wipes are a great fragrance-free option and contain gentle cleansing ingredients for a little extra cleaning power.

✦ Portable Changing Pad

The Tiny Twinkle Portable Changing Pad creates a clean surface for on-the-go diaper changes and keeps changing essentials conveniently organized. It fits nicely inside a diaper bag and is also perfect to grab on its own for a quick, casual outing when you don’t want to bring the whole kit and caboodle.

✦ 2 Extra Outfits

Diaper blowouts and spit-ups happen, so having one or two backup outfits is essential.

I love easy one-piece footies, and the soft organic cotton of the Burt’s Bees Baby Sleeper Pajamas makes them a comfortable and practical choice.

I also adore the Magnetic Me Footie Pajamas, which are even easier to use than a zipper design. The magnetic closures are brilliant, the fabric is incredibly soft, and the pajamas are absolutely yummy!

Mama Chick Pro Tip: Keep bags handy to contain dirty diapers or wet clothing. I love the Moodie teddy bear bag dispenser. It’s really a great accessory for containing soiled items on the go.

✦ Diaper Cream

For everyday rash prevention, Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment creates a great protective moisture barrier.

For irritation, dryness, eczema, baby acne, or diaper rash, Tubby Todd All Over Ointment is an absolute favorite cream. It is gentle, effective, and available in both full-size and travel-size containers.

✦ Burp Cloths

Burp cloths are also one of the easiest ways to stay clean and hygienic while holding your baby. Perfect for spit-up, spills, and any kind of unexpected mess.

Comfy Cubs Burp Cloths are thick enough to absorb spit-up and spills, yet soft and lightweight enough to feel comfortable over your shoulder and pack easily inside your diaper bag. Plus, I love the colors!

✦ Pacifiers, Clips, and Pacifier Case

For babies who refuse other pacifiers, the MAM Pacifier is often a winner. Its shape sits comfortably around a baby’s mouth and is designed to support natural oral development.

Pacifier clips help prevent pacifiers from constantly landing on dirty floors. Babygoal Pacifier Clips are soft and lightweight, making them comfortable against your baby’s delicate skin.

A 3-pack of pacifier cases keeps pacifiers clean, protected, and easy to find, while also making it simple to keep extras in your diaper bag, stroller, or car.

Mama Chick Pro Tip: Keep at least two pacifiers and clips in your diaper bag and also near baby’s crib so you always have an easily accessible and ready  backup!

Travel-Size Hand Sanitizer

I like the flatter, square design of the Tazza Hand Sanitizing Spray because it is easy to find inside a diaper bag and can even fit inside a back pocket for convenient access throughout the day.

Both unscented and lightly scented varieties are available.

✦ Swaddle or Lightweight Blanket

A lightweight blanket is perfect for keeping baby warm, providing nursing coverage, creating a clean surface for tummy time, or offering shade while on the go.

The PHF Muslin Swaddle Blanket is soft, breathable, and lightweight. The size is perfect for swaddling, too.

Favorite Toy or Teather

We love all of the Taggies products. Babies adore mouthing and exploring the soft fabric tags.

For snuggle time, try the Taggies Sherbet Lamb Lovey Toy.

For story time, explore the colorful pictures and sensory pages of the Taggies Touch & Feel Soft Cloth Book.

For “I forgot my burp cloth, but this can double as almost anything” time, grab the Taggies Original Blanket.

✦ Nursing Cover

We love the Mushie Nursing Cover for its breathable design and shaped neckline, which allows you to maintain visibility and eye contact with your baby while nursing.

✦ Baby Bottles

Dr. Brown’s Bottles are a great choice for helping reduce the amount of air a baby swallows, which may help minimize uncomfortable air bubbles in the belly.

Comotomo Bottles are a favorite for their soft silicone design and their ability to closely approximate the latch and overall feel of breastfeeding.

Mama Chick Pro Tip: Pay attention to nipple size. Newborns start with a stage one slow flow nipple!

✦ Formula Dispenser

If formula-feeding, this Formula Dispenser makes it easy to carry up to 3 pre-measured portions of formula for quick bottle preparation while you’re out and even at home.

✦ Baby Carrier

My personal favorite is the Baby K’tan Carrier. It offers the cozy, secure feeling of a traditional wrap without requiring you to tie or configure a long piece of fabric each time. With multiple carrying positions to choose from, it’s a comfortable and convenient option for carrying delicate newborns all the way through the toddler stage.

✦ Mom’s Essentials

Don’t forget your own essentials, including:

Wallet, keys, snacks and a water bottle. Staying hydrated is especially important, particularly while breastfeeding.

Keep one or two portable phone-charger banks inside your diaper bag as well so you’re never  caught in a bind with an empty phone battery.

Keep It Simple

Skip the extras that take up valuable space unless you know your baby specifically needs them. The goal is to stay prepared while keeping your diaper bag light, organized, and easy to carry.

Pro Tip: I like to keep a few backup supplies in the car and restock the diaper bag weekly so it is always ready for the next adventure.
